Over two decades after the effort to create this independent and nonpartisan oversight office began\, SB 4 was signed into law by Governor Matt Meyer on August 14\, 2025. Sen. Sturgeon and Rep. Laura Sturgeon\, the first Latina elected to the Delaware State Senate\, is chair of the Senate Education Committee\, a member of the Senate Labor and Elections & Government Affairs committee\, and sits on the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee. Her career in education includes teaching Spanish at Concord High School and English at Delcastle and Hodgson Technical high schools. She held a board seat on her teacher’s union executive committee and also on the board of the Delaware State Education Association. With a passion for women’s rights and a desire to help mold public education policy\, she was inspired her to run for a seat in the Delaware General Assembly. In 2025\, she sponsored Senate Bill 4\, to establish a Delaware OIG that was passed by the Senate and the House. It was signed into law on August 14\, 2025. \n  \nRep. Cyndie Romer\, House prime sponsor of SB 4 says\, “it is critical that we as a state government are transparent about our processes\, and any of the issues that arise within them.” With a degree in economics\, a background as a technology consultant\, and determined to use her “voice\, privilege\, and energy in the service of others\,” she has been a community advocate\, actively serving on Criminal Justice and Education committees for the NAACP – Newark Branch\, Moms Demand Action\, and ACLU of Delaware.
